Indeterminate Output Allocations in Collusive Equilibria and Multi-plant Firms

چکیده

If n colluding oligopolists all have the cost function C(qi) = c qi, then it will not be possible to uniquely allocate among the firms the monopoly output that maximizes their joint profit. Similarly, if all plants of an n-plant firm have the cost function C(qi) = c qi, then it will not be possible to uniquely allocate the firm’s optimal output among the n plants. This paper identifies the necessary and sufficient condition for such “allocative indeterminacies” to occur. DRAFT: Not for quotation Comments welcome

Oligopoly with Capacity Constraints and Thresholds

Abstract   Extended Oligopoly models will be introduced and examined in which the firms might face capacity limits, thresholds for minimal and maximal moves, and antitrust thresholds in the case of partial cooperation. Similar situation occurs when there is an additional cost of output adjustment, which is discontinuous at zero due to set-up costs. In these cases the payoff functions of the...

Self-fulfilling Prophecies and the Business Cycle

We demonstrate that multiple stationary rational-expectations equilibria exist in a version of Lucas’s island economy. The existence of these equilibria follows from the fact that there is an indeterminate set of monetary equilibria in the two-period overlappinggenerations model. We show how to construct stationary rational-expectations equilibria by randomizing over the set of nonstationary mo...

Equilibrium Involuntary Unemployment Under Oligempory

We show that equilibrium involuntary unemployment emerges in a multi– stage game model where all market power resides with firms, on both the labour and the output market. Firms decide wages, employment, output and prices, and under constant returns there exists a continuum of subgame perfect Nash equilibria involving unemployment and positive profits. A firm does not undercut the equilibrium w...

Collusion and Equilibrium Selection in Auctions*

We study bidder collusion and test the power of payoff dominance as an equilibrium selection principle in experimental multi-object ascending auctions. In these institutions low-price collusive equilibria exist along with competitive payoff-inferior equilibria. Achieving payoff-superior collusive outcomes requires complex strategies that, depending on the environment, may involve signaling, mar...
